Men have been growing beards since…forever. We can’t really help it. We’re REALLY good at it…not to mention, it’s just genetics. But the rise in popularity of of beard oil (and other beard health and styling products) is undeniable. So do you need to use beard oil to grow Gandalf-like face fuzz?

Well, as hinted at above, beards have been around long before beard oil, so the short answer is, “No.” So why have facial hair care products gotten so popular lately? Well, there’s actually something to beard oil that’s helpful to the health of your beard and the skin underneath.

Beard oils are typically made from a mixture of carrier oils, essential oils, and fragrance oils. Some popular carrier oils are argan, avocado, coconut, grapeseed, jojoba, and sweet almond. These oils moisturize, reduce inflammation, condition, and reduce acne. At Caballeros Supply Co., we use a concoction of jojoba, sweet almond, and grapeseed oils.

We all know essential oils are all the rage right now. Their growing popularity is partially due to their claims to treat issues such as restlessness, anxiety, nausea, etc. Whether you drink the Kool-Aid or not, I think we can all agree that they smell damn good. Beard products are scented with either essential oils (made from natural substances), fragrance oils (artificial scents), or a mixture of both. For example, our Dreamsicle Oil is scented with sweet orange and vanilla essential oils.

As for all of the other beard products out there (balm, wash, butter, conditioner, spray, wax, etc.), they typically contain the same carrier and scent oils as beard oil, but they add some other ingredients. For example, our balms contain the same carrier oil blend as listed above, but we add shea butter and beeswax. So you’re getting the same benefits as beard oil offers, but the added styling ability and hold of shea butter and beeswax. My daily regimen consists of applying oil to a damp beard and skin underneath, and finishing it off with balm to tame the stragglers.

You might be wondering, “If I’m currently unable to grow more than just a few measly whiskers, will facial hair products REALLY give me a beard like Aquaman?” Unfortunately, the answer here is likely “no.” There are some companies who claim that their beard products help with hair growth, but if you read a little further into their claims, you see that they are basically claiming their product moisturizes your skin, removes dead skin cells, etc., which can promote a healthier beard. While that’s true, beard oil isn’t going to plant beard hairs where they don’t already exist.
